This page describes my outdoors hobbies, which include camping, hiking, canoeing, mountain-climbing, and keeping track of the species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians I've seen in the wild.
Of course I try to indulge these same interests when I travel, but those descriptions can be found in my Exotic Travel page. This page is restricted to trips that took place in Canada and the U.S.
I first tried winter camping in 1995. It's not always easy and it's often not comfortable, but I do it anyway because it improves my survival skills, and this will make me a better outdoorsman in the summer. Besides the challenge, there are other reasons to winter camp. The backcountry sites that you love in the summer, but wish there were a few less people around, will usually be deserted in winter. You can toboggan, ski, snowshoe, and hike across a frozen lake. Animal tracks are easy to find and read. Most of all, nothing is prettier than a forest after a snowfall.
